인도네시아의 수많은 다이빙 성지 중에서도 할마헤라(Halmahera)는 오직 선택받은 다이버들만이 조용히 찾아가는 ‘마지막 개척지’입니다. 세계적인 다이빙 매체와 탐험가들이 “라자암팟의 압도적인 생태계와 렘베의 신비로운 매크로가 완벽하게 결합한 곳”이라 찬사하는 이 바다는, 사람의 손길이 닿지 않은 태초의 해양 생태계를 고스란히 간직하고 있습니다. 북술라웨시와 라자암파트 사이에 위치해 전 세계 산호 종의 75% 이상이 서식하는 '산호 삼각지대(Coral Triangle)'의 핵심부이지만, 연간 방문하는 다이버의 수는 극히 적어 온전한 나만의 언더워터 파라다이스를 만끽할 수 있는 곳이기도 합니다.
할마헤라 바다의 진면목은 예측 불가능한 역동성과 날것 그대로의 야생성에 있습니다. 먼저 미드 오션에 거대하게 솟아오른 ‘티포레 해산(Tifore Seamount)’은 펠라직(Pelagic) 액션의 정점을 보여줍니다. 눈이 시릴 정도로 새파란 블루 워터를 배경으로 수천 마리의 바라쿠다와 잭피쉬가 만들어내는 거대한 웅덩이와 토네이도는 매 다이빙마다 온몸을 전율케 합니다. 또한 두 바다가 만나 영양염류가 격렬하게 뿜어져 나오는 ‘파틴티 해협(Patinti Strait)’은 짜릿한 드리프트 다이빙의 성지입니다. 강한 조류를 타고 날아오르는 화이트팁, 블랙팁, 그레이 리프 샤크는 물론, 거대한 튜나와 자이언트 트레발리(GT)의 다이내믹한 사냥 활극이 눈앞에서 펼쳐집니다. 스케일 큰 대물들 사이로 펼쳐지는 테크니컬러 산호 정원은 시각적 포만감을 더합니다. ‘고라이치 제도’와 ‘웨다 베이’의 수직으로 떨어지는 압도적인 드롭오프 벽면은 수십 미터 아래가 투명하게 내려다보이는 크리스탈 같은 시야를 자랑합니다. 끝없이 펼쳐진 연산호와 거대한 부채산호 사이로 만타레이가 우아하게 날아다니고, 온갖 열대어와 바다거북이 평화롭게 공존하는 풍경은 경외감마저 자아냅니다. 반면, 화산섬 특유의 검은 모래가 깔린 ‘테르나테’와 ‘바찬 섬’ 주변은 수중 사진작가들의 심장을 뛰게 만드는 머크(Muck) 다이빙의 천국입니다. 고스트 파이프피쉬, 프로그피쉬, 플램보이언트 컷틀피쉬 등 희귀한 크리처들이 즐비하며, 특히 나이트 다이빙에서는 이 지역의 전설적인 엔데믹(고유종)이자 바닥을 걸어 다니는 신비로운 ‘할마헤라 워킹샤크(Halmahera Walking Shark)’를 직접 조우하는 마법 같은 경험을 선사합니다.
